Dr Jan Czarnecki

Dr Jan Czarnecki is Lecturer in Polish Literature and Language as well as Word and Music Studies at the University of Cologne (Germany). Born in 1989 in Warsaw, he graduated summa cum laude in Philosophy (BA, MA) from the College of Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities (MISH), University of Warsaw and received his Ph.D. degree with honours—Doctor Europaeus—from the University of Padua (Italy). He obtained a diploma with honours from the F. Chopin State Music School in Warsaw. He has been an Associated Researcher at the University of Lille-3 (France), where he worked with Prof. Bernard Sève and a Visiting Postgraduate Research Student at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), under the supervision of Prof. Peter Dayan. An active singer, he has performed as a soloist and as a member of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus Chamber Choir and of the Madrigalchor der Universität zu Köln. He worked as an editor at Universa. He has presented papers and chaired sessions at several international conferences, including 5th, 6th and 7th Conferences of the Royal Musical Association Music and Philosophy Study Group, King’s College, London (2015, 2017, 2019) and Essence and Context: A Conference Between Music and Philosophy, Vilnius (2016), as well as the conferences of the Word and Music Association Forum in Tempe, Arizona and Düsseldorf (2016, 2018, forthcoming 2022). He has published articles, reviews and translations from French and Italian in Ruch muzyczny, Universa, Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica and Res Facta Nova. His most recent research on music-literature relations includes a study on the music implied in the fourth canto of Adam Mickiewicz’s Konrad Wallenrod in Prace filologiczne (2020) and a chapter entitled "A Melopoetic Struggle between East and West: Mickiewicz and the Popular Idiom" in Words, Music, and the Popular (Palgrave Studies in Music and Literature, 2021).
